AP & Transfer Credit

Transfer Credit

MIT's academic departments may grant some credit for courses taken at your previous college or university. The Office of the First Year coordinates the transfer credit process for incoming first-year students. Decisions on credit are made by the department Transfer Credit Examiner.

Detail on seeking and using transfer credit can be found on the following pages:

In general, credit and/or appropriate placement may be offered if the courses are substantially equivalent to those in the MIT curriculum, and if the grade earned meets MIT standards. However, each department sets its own policies about awarding transfer credit and delegates this decision to its Transfer Credit Examiner, who reviews each request individually. For help in deciding whether to seek transfer credit, check MIT's subject descriptions and department web pages, especially in: Chemistry (ignore application process described there and follow steps here instead); Mathematics; and Physics.
