FAP—First-year Arts Program

Have you ever felt like you wanted to drop everything, and devote an entireweek to all things art? Yes?! Wonderful! Now’s the chance: there’s no better time to do this than during your first week at MIT! If you like making art, admiring art, or are even just interested in learning how toart, you’re welcome here at the Freshman Arts Program, where you’ll get to do that--and so much more.

We of the Freshman Arts Program have a simple goal: to expose you to all of the artistic opportunities MIT and the greater Boston area have to offer. To this end, we have a lot in store for first year students: you’ll be able to take part in a number of student and faculty-run workshops, visit and explore nearby artistic attractions and museums, participate in fun activities planned by the counselors, and make friends as you work with your fellow peers on a week-long artistic project of your choosing.

Workshops occur throughout the week and introduce students to many of the artistic classes and clubs on campus! Previous workshops have included: learning how to sing a cappella with various MIT a cappella groups, improv comedy with MIT’s improv club Roadkill Buffet, touring the metalworking forge, and much more!

Through activities and exploration, students will become more familiar with MIT’s campus before the semester begins and also have the chance to visit fun, arts-related places in both Boston and Cambridge! And if you’re curious about these fun places… well, you’ll have to come and see for yourself!

The week-long project happens during what we call “Discipline Time”. On day one, students will brainstorm arts projects they are interested in doing, and get into groups based off their interests. Each group will also be assigned one or few counselors to help support the students in their creative journeys. For a few hours every day during the remainder of the week, they will collaborate on a creation to show off to the rest of the students at our showcase on the final day! Projects can encompass any number of disciplines, and previous examples include:

  • A murder-mystery escape room (Writing, Acting, Game Design)
  • Choreographing and performing an original dance (Dancing)
  • Producing and performing a live song with electronic beats and rapping (Music)
  • A video-taped puppet show with hand-sewn puppets (Fine Arts, Film)
  • Writing and performing slam poetry (Writing)

There’s something magical about arts that are created alongside others, and we can say with confidence that the Freshman Arts Programwill be an experience you’ll never forget. Together, let’s engage with the curiosity, passion, and excitement that art encompasses! We’ll provide a low-stress, high-fun environment for you to bring out your inner finger-paint Picasso; all that’s left is for you to join in.
